Sweet Dreams Come True

Calorie-free? In your dreams.

No-cal? In your dreams.

When you first hear the name ‘La Pâtisserie des Rêves’ you could be forgiven for muttering a cynical ‘yeah right’ under your breath. A dream patisserie? In a city that’s bursting with glorious gateaux, it’s hard to lay claim to such a lofty moniker – but La Pâtisserie des Rêves gives it an awfully good try.

An offshoot of the ‘Masion des Rêves’ boutique hotels in Portugal and Morocco, La Pâtisserie des Rêves is the mouth-watering result of a collaboration with master patissiere Philippe Conticini, whose indulgent creations can make even the stiffest of lips dribble.

Refined and exquisite yet bursting with flavour, Conticini’s viennoiseries, mille-feuilles, tartes and other tantalising treats are testaments to the fine art of pastry-making. It’s therefore only fitting that the shops themselves (of which there are two) present Conticini’s concoctions in a slightly surreal, gallery-like manner, with individual samples of the day’s offerings presented on their own glass-covered plinths.

Where style and substance collide.

Style and substance collide.

As in a gallery, the visitor is free to browse and admire the clever display before asking an assistant for an entire Tarte Tatin for tonight’s dinner party, or a single slice for immediate consumption. (And the Tarte Tatin is exemplary: That so many apples sliced so thinly could be so melt-in-the-mouth-caramelly-gorgeous while the pastry base remains so flaky and crisp is nothing short of mindblowing.)

The take-away pink packaging will be a pleasing reminder of the shop’s contemporary flavour – and a lucky recipient of such a pink gift box will doubtlessly be delighted. Or should you find the time to eat-in, the small cafe at the back of the newly opened Rue de Longchamp shop is a relaxing oasis during a busy day. Just be warned: The on-site chou-pastry maker will wantonly destroy any hope you ever had of being slim.

Though dreamlike it may be, La Pâtisserie des Rêves is a calorie-counter’s cauchemar.
